renovation and extension of a mansion house
location : Brussels, BE | status : construction | surface : 530m2
The renovation of this 20th century house reconfigures the fragmented back façade of a mansion house in Brussels. Starting from the lower level, each overlying floor is recessed forming a staircase-like volume, thereby reorganizing and increasing the space inside the house. The extended half basement floor provides a multifunctional space with direct view and access to the garden. On ground floor a bright and spacious room enlarges the living area and gives access to a terrace overlooking (and connected to) the garden.
Conceived as a juxtaposition of two materials, rough plaster and stainless steel semi-transparent mesh, the façade expresses a rather complex, yet balanced, dualism which distinguishes the renovated parts of the house from the rebuilt ones.
